Apple announced plans to remove its encryption tool for U.K. users after the government demanded access to user data, BBC News reports. Apple's Advanced Data Protection allows users to load data into iCloud using end-to-end encryption. "As we have said many times before, we have never built a backdoor or master key to any of our products, and we never will," Apple said in a statement.

The New York City Police Department launched the use of its new surveillance technology, including a laser mapping device and a robotic police dog, despite concerns the agency might not be transparent about its use, Politico reports. Legal Aid Society's Digital Forensics Unit Supervising Attorney Jerome Greco said the NYPD must be transparent about the use of the tools to "help us understand just what it is the department is doing and whether it is legal and appropriate."

Also introduced is an amendment to the state's comprehensive consumer data privacy law aimed at improving provisions for data minimization, children's data and biometric data. The California Privacy Protection Agency fined data broker Jerico Pictures USD46,000 for not meeting data broker registration requirements under the Delete Act. CPPA Deputy Director of Enforcement Michael Macko said the agency will continue its efforts to enforce the Delete Act and "use all available tools, including litigation, to make sure that data brokers aren't operating in the dark."
